CONDUCT OF THE PRESIDENTŐS CUP TOURNAMENT
March, 2010
1. The Memorial Tournament is the qualifier tournament for the 2010 PresidentŐs Cup. After play ends, the players who indicated a desire to participate in the PresidentŐs Cup will be ranked by net scores (without Equitable Stroke Control), and the top 63 will qualify for the PresidentŐs Cup. Last yearŐs winner is automatically qualified, should he choose to exercise that right. Comparing scorecards, starting with hole #5, then # 15, and so forth by course hole handicap, will break ties (see the MGA Policy on Breaking Ties on the MGA website). Each playerŐs gross score with Equitable Stroke Control should be entered in the computer as a tournament round for handicap purposes.
2. The PresidentŐs Cup is a single-elimination, match play tournament starting on the Wednesday after the qualifying tournament and ending not more than six (6) weeks later. If a match is tied after 18 holes, play will continue on to the next hole in sequence (e.g., if tied after 18 holes on # 13, go to #14 to continue the match). The individual who first wins a hole, in this continuation of play, is the match winner.
3. The entrance fee for the PresidentŐs Cup is $10 (total entry fee). The winner of a match will receive $10 in sweeps and will advance to the next round. This applies to round 1 and to winners of all the remaining rounds. Once you qualify, you do not have to sign-up for play each week, as long as you are still in the competition.
4. The flights and seeding are based on handicap. After qualifying, the players will be ranked by handicap (black tee players having their handicap lowered by two). The 32 players with the lower handicaps are in one flight, and the remaining 32 are in the other flight.
5. The flight seeding is based on the player with the lowest handicap (corrected for any black tee players) playing the player with the highest handicap (corrected for any black tee players), and so forth through the flight.
6. Black tees are permitted for those qualified to use them (5 or more black tee scores in the computer). If two black tee players are playing a match, full black tee handicaps will be used for both players. If a black tee player is competing against a player using the white tees, the black tee playerŐs black tee handicap will be lowered by two strokes.
7. The winner and the runner up will play six matches. Seven days are allowed for each round, starting the Wednesday after the qualifying tournament.
8. Competitors should play their matches on regular Wednesday MGA playdays, if possible. Completion of matches must be before the following Tuesday, however, so the competition can be completed not more than six weeks after the start of the competition. The dates for the end of each round are noted on the Golf Master Calendar at http://www.rosedalemga.org/, in the MGA display case by the snack bar, and on the bracket sheet in the Pro shop.
9. Match play results will be posted on the bracket sheet on the Pro Shop bulletin board; the Pro Shop will maintain the bracket sheet. Be sure to tell the Pro Shop who won each match so the result can be posted and turn in your signed scorecard for verification. See item #13 below for the rules to create a score for posting for handicap purposes (also on the MGA Website under the ŇPoliciesÓ link.. The Pro Shop will place competitors in the same foursome for the next competition.
10A. FORFEIT: If one player cannot play a match before the scheduled deadline for the completion of a round because of personal reasons, sick, out-of-town, etc., he will forfeit the match, his competitor will be declared the match winner, will be awarded the sweeps, and will move on to the next round.
10B. DISQUALIFICATION: If two competitors cannot agree on a play date before the scheduled deadline for the completion of a round, BOTH competitors will be disqualified. For example, if two competitors could not play their round-3 match on the Wednesday when round 3 starts, they must agree on a time for their match on or before the date when round 3 is to be completed, or both will be disqualified.
11. For all matches, opponents play off the course handicap of the lowest handicap (adjusted for black tee players, if necessary) player who plays scratch. That is, the course handicap of the player with the lower handicap, adjusted if he is a black tee player, will be subtracted from the opponentŐs course handicap, and the difference in strokes will be assigned to holes based on the handicap rating for the course holes (i.e. handicap 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. for white or black tees depending on the player getting strokes). For example, a white tee player with a 17 course handicap, and an opponent white tee player with an 18 course handicap, would result in a match handicap for the opponent of one stroke (18-17), thus, giving the opponent one stroke on hole #5 (the number one handicap hole), while playing scratch himself. The strokes are given based on the course handicap for each hole, for each tee color. Handicaps at the start of the tournament will be used throughout the tournament. The official score cards made up by the Pro Shop for each match will have the handicap Ňdots'Ó adjusted according to the rules noted above.
12. Those participating in a Wednesday PresidentŐs Cup match cannot participate in any medal play competition on that same day.
13. For handicap purposes, post your scores using these rules. For any hole where your next shot was conceded, you should record for that hole what you most likely would have had. Example: You lie 3 on the green 20 feet from the hole and the putt is conceded, your score for posting is 5 as you have would most likely 2 putted. Further, if player hits two balls in the water or out-of-bounds, etc. and concedes the hole, he should take his maximum ESC for that hole. For any holes not completed after the match is over, you post par plus any course handicap strokes you receive on those holes (i.e. your regular course handicap, not the match handicap). Example: Your match ends on hole 16, and for hole 17 you would receive a one-stroke course handicap based on your regular handicap, not the dots on the scorecard; therefore your score for hole 17 is recorded as 4.
14. The winner and the runner up will receive gift cards; these will be presented at the annual meeting in December, and the winner will automatically qualify for the next yearŐs event, if he chooses to exercise that privilege.
16. The MGA President and Vice-President shall act as the PresidentŐs Cup Tournament Committee and shall adjudicate any conflicts. A Pro Shop representative will assist in settling any golf rules issues.
